The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Inclusion in English Test Series Squad
The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just two days before the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a surprise place.
Bashir's inclusion indicates that the tourists will wait until the day of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions suit four seamers or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected squad, showing there are no concerns about their pace bowler’s fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the bowling group, with Carse expected to miss out if the spinner enters the final team.
Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has staged five previous Tests.
During these matches, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have just a handful.
On a ground renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with fast bowlers remains the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Considered
Previously there was rumors that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to offer some slow bowling while also bolstering the lower order.
However McCullum has opted to keep faith with Bashir, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.
In July, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who haven’t done it in the previous in Australian pitches,” he remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents perform and excel out here.”
