Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned within a psychic prison built from the recollections of Vecna. Their quest for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode has them witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—an event that could contain the key to defeating him permanently.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

When she finds Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a cave that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies outside of the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy encounter an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the act wasn't just a fight for life.

In keeping with mysteries in volume 2, the significance of the mine shaft incident originates in the stage play the prequel play.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a warship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who returned in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to sell to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their parallel research. The man in the mine shaft is that employee.

The Briefcase's Contents

Given what is revealed about his research, the case would assuredly have samples of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would genetically impart to the children under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the case could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he battles the influence of a dark entity, similar to how the character Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory highlights how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to fortify himself.

Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the series finale that awaits.
