A senior Russian military figure has been fatally wounded following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.
The attack occurred on Monday morning when an explosive device planted beneath a vehicle was set off, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.
Investigators mentioned that one theory under investigation suggests the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has remained silent.
Site of the Incident
Teams have been sent to the location, which is said to be in a south district of the capital.
Media coverage indicate the explosion happened in a parking area near a residential building.
Series of Assaults
Since the onset of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military commanders have been attacked within Moscow.
This latest event echoes other notable incidents, such as:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a device placed on a scooter was detonated remotely.
While a Ukrainian source previously connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are rarely formally acknowledged as a matter of standard practice.
The war has been marked by clandestine operations moving into the heart of the Russian capital.
The investigation into General Sarvarov's death remains active.
