Jennifer Lawrence States Mentioning Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ Dividing the Country Apart
Jennifer Lawrence has declared that she believes it's no longer fitting to comment publicly against the Trump presidency, concerned it could exacerbate polarizing arguments and further divisions throughout the United States.
‘I Question the Usefulness’, Says Lawrence
During a discussion, the Oscar winner reflected, “When Trump was first in office, I felt like I was moving hastily like a chicken with my head cut off. But as we’ve learned, over multiple voting cycles, celebrities do not make a difference whatsoever on who people vote for.”
Lawrence added, “What’s the point? I’m just voicing my thoughts on a matter that’s going to heighten conflict dividing the country apart.”
Shifting Views
The actress has spoken candidly about supporting right and leftwing presidential nominees in past elections. Growing up with Republican parents in her home state, she voted for John McCain in 2008 prior to switching to the left-leaning politics and revealing she understood during Obama’s administration that voting Republican was opposing her own rights as a female citizen.
Past Statements
In 2015, she remarked that Donald Trump’s election would be “the end of the world” and publicly supported the Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential race. More recently, she voiced her backing to the Democratic nominee, “because I think she’s an amazing candidate and I trust that she will take all necessary steps to defend reproductive rights.”
Hollywood’s Stance
Lawrence was supported by most of Hollywood in her opposition to the former president as a presidential contender, but the lack of leverage stars have over the voting intentions was emphasized by the outcome.
“This upcoming term seems distinct,” noted she about Trump’s presidency. “As he stated his intentions. We were aware of his actions for his first term. He was transparent. And that’s what we chose.”
Latest Film
Lawrence is discussing her new film, the filmmaker’s movie in which she plays a young mom who faces challenges with her emotional state in a remote area. During a media event for the movie in Venice, the star commented on the conflict in Gaza: “I feel fear. It’s mortifying. What’s occurring is equivalent to a genocide and it’s horrible.”
Broader Concerns
The actress elaborated by expressing that she was disappointed by “the lack of civility in the discourse of U.S. political debates at present and how that is going to be accepted to the children right now. It’s going to be standard to them that politicians lie.”
She sought to redirect outrage about the issue to decision-makers rather than actors and artists. “Concentrate on the people in charge,” she remarked, seen by observers as a reference to the then-recent pledge endorsed by more than 4,000 Hollywood professionals to avoid Israeli film institutions.
Relatable Experiences
The actor, who won an Oscar aged 22 for her part in her breakout movie, is attracting awards attention for her work in the new film. Although the director has denied the narrative being interpreted as one of post-birth struggles and mental illness, the actress revealed that she connected with parts of her film narrative after the birth of her second son, not long after shooting ended.
“I felt anxiety about my child,” she explained, “imagining every negative outcome, and then questioning everything that I was doing. I was receiving counseling, but I began using a drug called that medicine and I used it for a short period and it made a difference.”
Professional Experiences
Lawrence also mentioned of the empowering aspect of completing nude scenes in the movie while she was some months pregnant and limited physically.
“It feels nice,” she said, about having to cast off vanity. “Truly, I do have moments where I’m like, How exactly do I differ between myself and a sex worker? But it doesn’t keep me up at night.”
