Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a batch of electronic messages between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
He stated in a statement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have contributed, enthusiastic about the prospects of the enterprise, and anticipate following their advancement".
Summers, who formerly headed the prestigious university, declared on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public communications demonstrated that the economist exchanged messages with the financier until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the AI firm said it respected his choice to depart.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the Board," the organization commented.
Legislative Background
This development follows after the two houses of the US legislature voted on this week to approve a bill that would require the Department of Justice to make public its documents on Epstein.
The legislation will then move to the administration of President Trump for signature. The President has indicated he intends to sign the bill, after changing his stance on the issue following pressure from his supporters.
Email Contents
A collection of financier-linked correspondence made public by the House Oversight Committee last week mentioned several prominent individuals in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any criminal activity by those individuals.
The communications revealed that the professor and Epstein dined together frequently, with he often attempting to introduce Summers to influential global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were shared with the public, the former official stated he accepted "complete accountability for my poor judgment to persist in communicating with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he wanted "to reestablish trust and fix relationships with the people most important to me".
Previous Positions
The professor occupied leadership roles under Democratic administrations; serving as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He headed Harvard from five years and is still a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments earlier on this week, he stated he would continue his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank in DC where he was a prominent member, verified that Summers was not connected with the organization.
Summers entered the directorate of OpenAI, which creates the AI chatbot, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its top executive the company leader.
