Chicago's MLB Team Land Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on an Major Two-Year Agreement.
In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract for the power-hitting player.
Deal Structure and Incentives
The deal features a $1 million signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside compensation of sixteen million for the upcoming season and $17 million for the 2027 year.
Importantly, Murakami's compensation may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for being named the Most Valuable Player award.
- $500K for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for placing in the top ten.
- An identical bonus for being named the top rookie honor.
The contract also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his approval and makes him a free agent at the termination of the deal. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between Japan and the U.S..
Posting Fee and Team Legacy
As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows get a additional payment of fifteen percent triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to play for the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.
Player Profile
Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 on February 2nd, enters a young lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a difficult season, placing last in the American League Central but showing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.
A two-time league MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is famous for a record-breaking 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, breaking the single-season record for a Japanese-born player previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's elusive Triple Crown.
His last year was curtailed to just 56 appearances due to an muscle issue. Even with fanning 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. He started playing primarily at first, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.
WBC Heroics
Murakami's big-game performance were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off two-base hit that scored teammates for a dramatic 6-5 win. The following day in the championship game against the Team USA, he slugged a tying home run in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.
The lefty slugger is slated to be officially presented at a press conference on the coming Monday.
