A Tragic Transformation Only 12 Months Has Made in the United States

Twelve months back, the situation was utterly separate. Ahead of the national election, thoughtful Americans could recognize the country's deep flaws – its injustices and disparity – but they still could see it as the United States. A democracy. A land where legal governance held significance. A country headed by a respectable and ethical official, even with his elderly years and growing weakness.

Nowadays, this autumn, numerous citizens hardly identify the land we inhabit. Persons suspected of being illegal immigrants are rounded up and pushed into transport, sometimes blocked from fair treatment. The East Wing of the “people’s house” – is undergoing demolition for an obscene event space. The president is harassing his political rivals or perceived antagonists and insisting the justice department transfer a massive sum of public funds. Uniformed troops are being sent across metropolitan centers on false pretexts. The defense headquarters, rebranded the Defense Ministry, has – in effect – freed itself of regular press examination while it uses possibly reaching close to a trillion USD of taxpayer money. Universities, legal practices, news companies are submitting from leader's menaces, and wealthy elites are regarded as nobility.

“The United States, shortly prior to its 250th birthday as the world’s leading democracy, has fallen over the edge into authoritarianism and fascism,” an American historian, wrote in August. “Finally, faster than I imagined possible, it occurred in this country.”

One awakes with fresh terrors. It is challenging to understand – and distressing to accept – how severely declined we have become, and the speed at which it unfolded.

Nevertheless, we know that the leader was properly voted in. Even after his highly troubling first term and despite the warnings linked to the knowledge of Project 2025 – even after the leader directly stated openly he intended to rule as a tyrant just on day one – sufficient voters selected him instead of his Democratic opponent.

While alarming as the present situation may be, it’s even scarier to realize that we are just nine months under this leadership. Where will another 36 months of this deterioration find us? And suppose that period becomes something even longer, as there is no one to limit this ruler from opting that a third term is essential, maybe for defense purposes?

Certainly, not everything is hopeless. There are congressional elections the coming year which might bring a different political equilibrium, in case Democrats regain either chamber of the legislature. We have elected officials who are attempting to impose certain responsibility, such as representatives who are starting a probe into the attempted cash appropriation from legal authorities.

And a leadership election in the next cycle could initiate our journey to recovery just as last year’s election put us on this regrettable path.

There exist millions of Americans demonstrating in urban areas throughout communities, like they performed last weekend during anti-authority protests.

An ex-cabinet member, stated lately that “the dormant powerhouse of America is rising”, just as it did following the Red Scare during the fifties or amid the Vietnam war protests or throughout the seventies crisis.

On those occasions, the listing ship ultimately corrected itself.

He claims he knows the signs of that revival and observes it occurring at present. As support, he points to the large-scale demonstrations, the broad, multi-faction opposition to a personality's dismissal and the largely united refusal by journalists to agree to the defense department’s demands they only publish what is sanctioned.

“The slumbering entity consistently stays asleep before some venality becomes so noxious, an specific act so disrespectful of societal benefit, specific cruelty so loud, that the giant is forced but to awaken.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I value Reich’s experienced view. Possibly he may turn out correct.

Meanwhile, the major inquiries remain: is the US able to regain its footing? Can it retrieve its standing internationally and its devotion to the rule of law?

Or must we acknowledge that the national endeavor functioned for a period, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My cynical mind tells me that the final scenario is correct; that everything could be gone. My optimistic spirit, however, convinces me that we must try, in whatever ways available.

Personally, as a media critic, that involves encouraging reporters to live up, more fully, to their mission of scrutinizing authority. For others, it might involve participating in congressional campaigns, or coordinating protests, or developing approaches to protect voting rights.

Less than a year ago, we existed in a very different place. In the future? Or after another term? The reality is, we don’t know. All we can do is to strive to continue fighting.
